NUTRITION AND MENTAL HEALTH:
Dr. Hoffer addresses the role that nutrition plays in mental illness. In the1950’s, Dr. Hoffer began treating schizophrenics with high doses of Vitamin B3 (Niacin) in combination with standard medical therapy. He was able to double the number of recoveries in a one-year period.” “Malnutrition and improper nutrition creates risk causing or contributing to the development of disease and psychiatric disorders. Health can be impaired by consumption of refined foods such as white bread, pastries and refined sugar.” The notion that diet and food sources could improve health or contribute to disease was in the 1950’s a new and controversial idea, and continues to be so even in the 21st Century.
